Geomagnetophilia
Geomagnetophilia is a CSIRO initiative aimed at introducing students to magnetic field exploration geophysics and providing valuable resources for both teaching and research in the field. The project is particularly designed to support those considering a career in exploration geophysics, as well as practicing geophysicists.
Over the course of two years, CSIRO will release twelve case studies featuring significant magnetic anomalies. These anomalies are sourced from, or will be added to, the Australian Remanent Anomalies Database (ARAD) — a CSIRO-developed tool to support magnetic field exploration in Australia and beyond.
Each Case Study Includes:
- A general overview of the magnetic anomaly and its source geology, along with a more detailed geophysical analysis (to be published in ASEG Preview)
- A downloadable magnetic field image suitable for use in Google Earth
- Input datasets and output results from modelling, inversion, and interpretation
These case studies serve as examples of remanent magnetisation, offering insight into how ancient geomagnetic fields have influenced present-day anomalies — a concept we refer to as geomagnetophilia.
